Lights on the River is one of Wichita’s newest annual holiday events that takes place downtown by the Arkansas river. Despite freezing temperatures, the event took place as scheduled on Saturday, December 7.
The purpose of the event is to highlight one of the Wichita’s oldest natural assets – The Arkansas River. To celebrate the city’s river, many of the events took place near the Wichita Boathouse, along the Lewis Street Bridge.
Beginning at 5 PM, the Cessna Jazz Band filled the air with holiday music, playing on the floating stage near the bridge. Visitors enjoyed the event’s various festivities which included winter wagon rides, s’mores stations and the waltzing waters fountain display. Food trucks from several traveling food vendors in Wichita provided visitors a variety of dinner options along the Lewis Street Bridge.
The event’s main attraction kicked-off at 6 PM with the release of glowing LED orbs into the Arkansas River. Due to the freezing temperatures, the orbs were not released into the river due to freezing. Instead, visitors were asked to raise their orbs into the sky, as the band played.
Concluding the event’s festivities was a spectacular fireworks show at the Lawrence Dumont Stadium at 6:15 PM.
