More than likely you know this already, but the Kansas State Fair starts this Friday, giving you plenty of things to do. Where else can you go this weekend that’ll provide food like fried Kool-Aid, chocolate drizzled popcorn, alligator on a stick, and Krispy Kreme burgers?
If you can’t make it out to the fair, there are plenty of other events that will keep you entertained this weekend. Checkout a custom car show under the wings of old war planes, spend the weekend eating BBQ, or hit up a few concerts.

1) Kansas State Fair
Time: Event Times Vary
Date: September 6 – September 15
Where: Kansas State Fairgrounds, 2000 N. Poplar St., Hutchinson
Cost: $6.00 for Adults, $4.00 for Seniors (60 years & over), $3 for Children (ages 6 – 12), Children 5 & under are FREE
Why you should go: Kansas State Fair will be taking over Hutchinson all week long with thrilling rides for adults and children, fatty fried foods, contests and prizes, furry animals and musical performances. The first weekend of the fair will include performances from two known names in the music industry.
The 70s rock sensation, Kansas, will perform Friday evening, September 6 at 7:30 PM on grounds of the U.S. Cellular Grandstand. The band is best known for their hit singles, “Carry On Wayward Son,” and “Dust in the Wind.” Ticket prices are $13.
On Saturday, September 7, pop singer and actress from Disney’s ‘Good Luck Charlie’ TV series, Bridgit Mendler, will perform along with another ‘Good Luck Charlie’ actor/singer, Shane Harper. Tickets to see the Mendler/Harper performance are $29.

2) Starliner Custom Car Show
Time: 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Date: Saturday, September 7
Where: Kansas Aviation Museum, 3350 George Washington Blvd., Wichita
Cost: $8.95 for Adults, $7.95 for Seniors, $6.95 for ages 4 – 12, Children 3 & under are FREE
Why you should go: Another car show will be making an appearance in Wichita this weekend. But this time – the car show will be displayed under the wings of a KC-135, B-52 and other historically significant aircraft.
The Kansas Aviation Museum will be hosting the Stray Kat Kustoms custom car show for the fourth year in a row. The fun-filled car show will feature over 200 custom cars on the outside grounds of the Kansas Aviation Museum. The family-friendly event will also include vendors, great food and rockin’ music.
All proceeds from the Starliner Custom Car Show will benefit the Kansas Aviation Museum.

3) National Bar-B-Que Derby
Dates: Friday, September 6 – Saturday, September 7
Time: Fri. 7:00 – 11 PM, Sat. 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Where: High Park, 2700 E. Madison, Derby
Cost: FREE (unless competing in an event)
Why you should go: This one’s for all you barbeque lovers out there! On Friday and Saturday, the 3rd Annual National Bar-B-Que Derby will once again take place at Derby’s High Park. This community-wide event will include a competitive BBQ competition, People’s Choice competition, a backyard BBQ competition, cookie baking contest for kids and an apple and cherry pie baking contests.
The 2-day event will also include food and craft vendors, a kids’ corner, car show, live concerts, beer garden, and other fun activities.
Make sure to bring $5 so that you can try 5 different BBQ samples and vote for your favorite.

Why you should go: Legendary pop vocalist Johnny Mathis is best-known for hit singles 'Chances Are' and 'Too Much, Too Little, Too Late,' ‘Misty,’ and ‘It’s Not For Me To Say.’Mathis won a Lifetime Achievement Grammy in 2003, has received 3 Grammy nominations, and has twice been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
