Time Over Money
I’m not rolling in money (who is?) so when I give back; it’s usually with my time. As a proud member of the Wichita Junior League I get plenty of opportunities to volunteer. They set up various events for the entire league though out the course of a year.
Last Wednesday I served dinner at the Lord’s Diner in downtown Wichita. The Lord’s Diner serves meals 365 nights a year to the homeless or people who simply can’t afford to buy food one week. They have a small paid staff, we’re talking tiny, but the rest is run by volunteers, who prep, serve, clean up and refill drinks. I was a little nervous about serving dinner because let’s be honest anytime we get out of our comfort zone it’s uncomfortable.
My concerns were put to rest by the friendly staff and grateful clients I was able to speak with throughout the night. And I will be honest; of all the places I’ve volunteered The Lord’s Diner left the biggest impression. I’m not sure if it was the people, or the fact that wiping down tables drew more compliments than I deserved but serving dinner never felt better.
They need new volunteers every night and I would encourage you to consider giving them your time, they even have security guards who will walk you out if you’re uncomfortable being downtown at night.
I got to witness how one plate of food really could change someone’s life or at the very least their day. I look forward to going back, hope to see you there!
