The Backstretch Blog: Is Jack in the future?

Just where will Carl Edwards be driving in 2015? Most people believe it will not be for Roush-Fenway racing and reports over the weekend out of Sonoma by the Associated Press and FOX Sports saying even if Edwards has decided where he’s going next season, he can’t make that announcement until September, per his contract.

The most talked about possible landing spot for the biggest NASCAR free agent is Joe Gibbs racing. There have also been some rumblings that M&M might move from the 18 car, to whatever JGR car Edwards might be driving. On Friday AP reporter Jenna Fryer tweeted, “JD Gibbs calls the M&M's recent reports "bad journalism" and tells me "I can't talk about that" to all Carl Edwards queries.”

Meanwhile, much like Kevin Harvick a season ago when he parted ways with RCR, Edwards possible lame duck status at Roush doesn’t seem to be holding back the 99 car one bit.

"I think you guys worry about that more than we do," said Edwards after winning his second race of the season Sunday in Sonoma. "We come out here and race every week and the mission is to win the championship.”

And maybe that is true. NASCAR silly season talk seems to be starting earlier and earlier every year. But drivers still have a job to do. As Harvick said as season ago, you never know when your chances at a championship may come, and you have to take advantage of them when they are there.

At the end of the day every driver no matter who they are driving for wants the same thing anyway, to win.

“For me it's really simple,” said Edwards. “I just have to give the best I can every week and that's it."

So while Jack (Roush) may not be in the long time future for Edwards, in the short term, don’t expect him to do anything less than drive hard and compete for more wins and a possible championship this season.
