The Wichita State Shockers baseball team run ruled SIU in seven innings 10-0 on Friday.
The Shockers started things off early in the bottom of the first inning. Casey Gillaspie connected with a two-run double off the centerfield wall to put the Shockers up 2-0 in the first. Next batter up, Cody Simpson, lifted one over the right-center wall for a three-run homer. The Shockers had a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth. Tyler Baker drove a pitch up the middle to the Saluki centerfielder bringing home an RBI. The Shockers added four more runs in the bottom of the seventh to win 10-0.
A.J. Ladwig pitched all scoreless seven innings with three strikeouts and improves to 3-5.
The Shockers play game two of the three game series with the Salukis Saturday, April 19 at 2 p.m. at Eck Stadium.
Here is the complete release from Shocker Athletics:
AJ Ladwig went the distance and Chase Simpson led the Shocker hitting attack as Wichita State opened the three-game series with a 10-0 run rule win over Southern Illinois on Friday night. All nine Shocker starters recorded a hit in the win.
Ladwig threw seven shutout innings and struck out three Saluki batters in the process. Simpson went 3-for-4 at the plate, including a three-run bomb in the first inning for Wichita State.
Daniel Kihle led off the first inning for the Shockers with his fifth consecutive hit dating back to the Oral Roberts game. Kihle stole second before Tanner Dearman and Garrett Bayliff drew back-to-back walks to load the bases for Wichita State. Gillaspie then came up in the cleanup spot and belted a two RBI double off the centerfield wall for an early 2-0 Shocker lead.
Simpson then took a 2-0 pitch from Saluki starter Sam Coonrad over the right field wall for a three-run homerun and a 5-0 Wichita State lead.
With runners or second and third and only one out in the fourth, the Salukis threatened for the first time in the game. But Ladwig was able to get out of the jam with a fly out by Ryan Casillas and strikeout by Cody Daily to end the inning with no runs surrendered.
The Shockers put another run on the scoreboard when Simpson doubled with two outs and scored on a RBI single from Tyler Baker for a 6-0 lead after five innings.
Wichita State threatened again in the sixth when they loaded the bases with one out. Tanner Kirk reached on a fielding error and Dearman and Bayliff singled to center. However, the Shockers failed to score more insurance runs when Saluki reliever Matt Murphy got Gillaspie to pop out to third and Simpson to groundout to shortstop to end the inning and Shocker threat.
Bayliff ended the game in the seventh with a two RBI single to right that scored Zair Koieman and Kihle for the 10-0 run-rule victory.
The Shockers and Salukis will continue their series tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. inside Eck Stadium.
