Wichita, Kan. -

The Wichita State baseball team will embark upon a new era under head coach Todd Butler on Friday. The Shockers open their 2014 season against SIU-Edwardsville in a three game series at 3 p.m. at Eck Stadium.

"You never know what's going to happen until you meet another team in competition and you have to make adjustments as the season goes," Butler said. "Hopefully our guys are ready. I know they are very much prepared and they should have some comfort in the practice schedules we've worked and all the things that we've covered."

All of the snow and bad weather has the Shockers preparing for the Cougars in their indoor facility. Butler hopes they can be on the field on Thursday but practicing indoors has not hindered their preparation.

"With this indoor facility the guys have done a great job," Butler said. "We've been in it for a little while here and we've had a lot of quality work in here."

The players are eager to start the season and more excited just to get back outside.

"You know it's harder for the players,"Butler said. "You know we've been in the indoor facility and they are itching to get outside. They look outside and there's snow on the field but the administration is doing a good job and trying to get the snow removed from the field and hopefully we get a sunny day tomorrow and hopefully be prepared to play at 3 o'clock on Friday."
