The final game of the series proved to be a battle of the bats, with Wichita State and Drake combining for 24 hits, but the Shockers came out on top, sweeping the Bulldogs with an 8-7 victory Saturday afternoon at Ron Buel Field.

Cacy Williams was a force at the plate for Wichita State, hitting 4-for-5 at the plate with two home runs, two RBIs and three runs scored in the victory. Brittany Fortner and Kelli Spring each hit 2-for-4, combining for three RBIs on the day.

Katie Malone (15-5) was recorded with the win for the Shockers, allowing three hits and three runs, while striking out four in 2.2 innings pitched.

Williams hit a leadoff single up the middle, advancing to second on a SAC bunt by Jaegers and reaching third on a wild pitch before Fortner hit a RBI double to left field to give the Shockers a 1-0 lead.

Drake responded in the bottom half of the inning, hitting a single to left field before Laura Brewer hit a home run to left field to take a 2-1 lead, the first lead of the weekend for the Bulldogs.

Jenni Brooks made her 12th appearance in a Shocker uniform, replacing Sloan Anderson after 1.2 innings, five hits and two runs allowed.

Williams connected again in the third inning, hitting her 11th home run on the season to tie the game, 2-2.

The Bulldogs hit another home run in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead once again, 3-2, followed immediately by a single to left center but Jenni Brooks retired the next two batters to get the Shockers out of the inning.

Fortner hit a leadoff single in the fifth inning, retiring on a force at second that saw Luellen reach first before Broyles and Mason hit back-to-back singles to tie the game, 3-3. Ali Vandever reached on a Drake throwing error that scored a runner and Wichita State regained the lead, 4-3.

Malone relieved Brooks in the fifth inning after Brooks allowed three hits and two runs in 2.2 innings pitched.

The lead wouldn’t last for long, however, as Brewer would hit her second home run of the game to give the Bulldogs a 5-4 advantage in the fifth inning before Malone struck out the next two batters to get the Shockers out of the inning.

Williams would not let Drake keep the lead, hitting her second home run of the game and 12th of the season to center field, tying the game, 3-3, for the third tie of the game.

Malone blindsided the first two batters, both striking out looking and the Shocker defense retired the next batter to go into the seventh inning with the momentum at the plate.

Wichita State loaded the bases after Broyles reached on a Drake error, and a pitch hit Mason and Vandever before Ashley Johnson hit a RBI SAC fly to right field to put the Shockers ahead 6-5. Spring hit a two RBI single up the middle immediately following to give Wichita State the 8-5 advantage.

Brewer completed a hat-trick for Drake in the bottom of the seventh with a two run homer to left field to cut the Wichita State lead, 8-7 with two outs. Johnson made the final out of the game on the next batter, however, as the Shockers swept the Bulldogs.

Wichita State is next in action when it travels to Springfield, Mo., for a doubleheader against Missouri State, Tues., April 22. The first game is scheduled for 3 p.m. with the second game immediately following.
