Shocker baseball sweeps Sunday doubleheader against Stephen F. Austin

The Wichita State Shockers baseball team fell 1-0 in their series opening game against Stephen F. Austin but in their doubleheader to finish the series on Sunday the Shockers swept. They earned win the first win of the day 4-3 over the Lumberjacks and dominated the second game of the doubleheader 6-0.

Micah Green went 3-for-4 with three RBI to lead Wichita State to a 4-3 win over Stephen F. Austin in game two of a three-game series.

Starter Cale Elam earned the win. He pitched seven innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. Foster Vielock picked up his third save of the season.

The Lumberjacks scored the game’s first run in the second inning. Nick Ramos singled up the middle with one out and scored on a one-out triple to right-centerfield by Kyle Thornell.

SFA added an unearned run in the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead.

The Shockers answered with three runs in the sixth. After Casey Gillaspie reached on a two-base error, Chase Simpson singled to right field to bring in Gillaspie to cut the lead to 2-1. Micah Green then hit a home run to left field to give the Shocks a 3-2 lead.

Garrett Bayliff and Gillaspie led off the eighth with walks and Bayliff scored on a single to centerfield by Green to put the Shocks up 4-2.

The Lumberjacks scored a run in the ninth off of Vielock, but he stranded runners at first and second with a strikeout to end the game.

Wichita State used seven shutout innings from Sam Tewes to defeat Stephen F. Austin 6-0 in the final game of a three-game series.

Tewes allowed seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts and earned his third win of the season. Garrett Bayliff went 3-for-4 with an RBI, a double and a triple to lead the Shocker offense.

The Shockers got on the board in the second inning. Micah Green led off with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a bunt from Daniel Kihle. Dayne Parker then singled to left field to drive in Green and put the Shocks up 1-0.

Garrett Bayliff led off the sixth with a single to left field and moved to third on a double by Casey Gillaspie. An infield single from Chase Simpson scored Bayliff and a sacrifice fly from Green made the score 3-0. Parker Zimmerman’s two-out single scored Simpson to put the Shockers up 4-0.

Back-to-back triples from Joe Haddox and Bayliff in the seventh increased the lead to 5-0 and Tanner Dearman led off the eighth with a walk, stole second and third and scored on a wild pitch for a 6-0 lead.

The Shockers are next in action on Tue., March 11 at Oklahoma State at 6:30 p.m.
