Lady Shockers extend winning streak to 12

Led by Alex Harden’s 22 points, the Wichita State women’s basketball team defeated Northern Iowa 80-47 in Charles Koch Arena Saturday evening. The win marks the 12th straight victory for the Shockers and keeps Wichita State undefeated in MVC play.

Michelle Price had 16 points for the Shockers off of 6-of-9 shooting and led the team with 12 rebounds, while Jamillah Bonner and Alie Decker each added 10 points. Wichita State shot 49 percent (29-for-59) from the field and 50 percent (7-for-14) from three-point range. Northern Iowa was held to 28 percent (15-for-53) from the field and just 17 percent (3-for-17) from beyond the arc. 

The Shockers started the contest on a 20-7 run in the first six minutes of the game, capped by a layup by Price at the 14:15 mark. Wichita State then held Northern Iowa without a field goal for two minutes before the Panthers made a layup with 13:06 left in the half.

Northern Iowa went on its own 7-2 run before Harden stole the ball and laid it in at the 8:52 mark. The Panthers quickly responded with a three at the other end, cutting the Shocker lead, 24-19. Both teams went cold from the field and were held scoreless until the 3:40 mark when Northern Iowa made a layup, cutting into the Wichita State lead once again, 26-21.

The Panthers would get within two on a layup from Brittni Donaldson with 1:44 left in the half but Decker responded with a three in the corner and Harden hit a three shortly after to take the Shockers in the locker room with a 35-27 advantage.

Price led all scorers at the half with 10 and tied Harden with six rebounds. Harden chipped in nine points in the first 20 minutes, while Alie Decker contributed eight on 3-of-4 shooting. Wichita State shot 43 percent (13-for-30) from the field and 44 percent (4-for-9) from three-point range, holding Northern Iowa to 32 percent (9-for-28) from the field and 33 percent (3-for-9) from beyond the arc.

The Shockers raced out to a 14-2 run coming out of the locker room, holding the Panthers to just 20 percent (1-for-5) from the field in the opening minutes. Wichita State went on a two minute scoring drought before Decker hit a jumper at the free throw line and Harden hit a jumper shortly after, extending the Shocker lead, 53-29.

The teams traded baskets over the next several minutes but back-to-back layups for Wichita State and a three from Dapprich gave the Shockers a 70-41 advantage with 6:32 left in the game.

Newcomers Kayla White and Moriah Dapprich hit back-to-back jumpers to give Wichita State its largest lead of the game, 77-45. Marissa Preston hit a three with 45 seconds left on the clock to give the Shockers their 12th straight victory on the season, 80-47.

The Shockers have a quick turnaround, as they host Drake Monday, Jan. 20 inside Charles Koch Arena. Tip-off is slated for 3:30 p.m. and will be shown on MVC-TV.
