WICHITA, Kan. (Wichita State Athletics) -

For the second-straight season, Wichita State’s Alex Harden has been named the MVC Defensive Player of the Year. It is the first time in school history and third time in Valley history a player has been given the award in back-to-back years.

A junior from Springfield, Ill., Harden has once again been the defensive catalyst for the Shockers this season. She continually guards the top scorer on opposing teams, using her athleticism to lead one of the best defenses in the Valley.

Harden leads Wichita State in steals with 67 and is second on the team in blocks with 34. Led by Harden, the Shockers have held 13 opponents to 55 points or less and only allow teams to score 57.9 points per game, which is the best scoring defense in the conference.

Named to the MVC All-Defensive Team on Wednesday, Harden is the third Wichita State player to be given that honor in back-to-back years, as Antionette Wells did it in 2005-06/2006-07 and Haleigh Lankster did it in 2010-11/2011-12.
