Casey Gillaspie drafted by Tampa Bay

WICHITA, Ka. -

Wichita State baseball student-athlete Casey Gillaspie became the 14th Shocker drafted in the first round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Gillaspie, a junior first baseman from Omaha, Neb., was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays and was the 20th pick of the 2014 draft.

In 2014, he hit .389 with 50 runs, 82 hits, 15 doubles, one triple, 15 home runs, 50 RBI, 58 walks and eight stolen bases. He was named a first team All-American and the Joe Carter Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year.

He is the first Shocker to be taken in the first round since his brother Conor who was taken with the 37th pick by the San Francisco Giants in 2008.

Other Shockers taken in the first round include Joseph Krsnich (1972), Joe Carter (1981), Bryan Oelkers (1982), Erik Sonberg (1983), Russ Morman (1983), Tyler Green (1991), Darren Dreifort (1993), Mike Drumright (1995), Braden Looper (1996), Ben Christensen (1999), Mike Pelfrey (2005), Kris Johnson (2006) and Conor Gillaspie (2008).
