As they say in racing, Kevin Harvick stunk up the show. Harvick lead 224 of the 312 laps for his first victory with his new team Stewart Haas Racing.
“It’s just a huge credit to the team really,” said Harvick. “It’s the organization and everyone as we have gone through the process this winter.”
Kansas native Clint Bowyer had an up and down day in the desert. He went a lap down early, but battled his way back to be in position to get his lap back when Danica Patrick and Justin Allgaier tangled on lap 171.
Bowyer used a little pit strategy to climb into the top 10 late in the race. But several late cautions bunched the field up and Bowyer would have to settle on a 13th place finish.
“We had our 5-hour ENERGY Toyota in the top-10 there at the end,” said Bowyer. “I just didn’t have enough grip there on those restarts with all the cautions late in the race. But a solid day for (crew chief) Brian Pattie and the 5-hour ENERGY guys with 13th.”
Bowyer jumped 16 spots in the points to 23rd two races in. Dale Earnhardt, Jr finished second at Phoenix and remains the points leader.
Jamie McMurray had another solid run in his car sponsored by Wichita based Cesena, finishing 10th.
Matt Kenseth, whose front tire changer John Royer is from Kansas, finished 12. Casey Mears, whose tire specialist Bryan Kincheloe is also from Kansas, was 14th.
