Only the brave do the Polar Plunge

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to jump into a freezing cold lake in the middle of winter? That’s exactly what a few people got to find out at this year’s Wichita Polar Plunge.
Brave individuals took the plunge into O.J. Watson Park’s 39 degree lake on Saturday, February 1. With an outside temperature of 26 degrees, the cold was enough to have participants running for warmth after taking the plunge.
The Polar Plunge is a yearly fundraiser that raises money for the Special Olympics.
At 12 p.m., groups of superheroes, beauty queens, and other costumed individuals took turns jumping into the freezing lake.
One by one, each group was instructed to take the “Polar Plunge” dive and completely submerge themselves in the ice cold water… a perfect recipe for hypothermia.
The benefit also included a silent auction and an area where “warm” food and beverages were provided for the chilled participants.
