A local vet has a warning for pet owners: a porcupine is in the area.

Dr. Gary Stamps, Animal Hospital at Auburn Hills, said he doesn't treat pets who had been "quilled" too often. But Thursday morning, he removed more than 200 quills from Tatum, a Boxer who lives with his family in Goddard.

"There were many of them that were actually penetrating the gum tissue next to the teeth," Dr. Stamps said. It took about an hour-and-a-half to complete the surgery.

Gary Koenigs said he first thought his dog's white beard was made of chicken feathers. But after closer inspection, he could see his puppy was in pain.

"He was pacing the patio," Koenigs said. "I probably pulled 50 out, then they started getting really hard to pull out."

Dr. Stamps said he's only treated three other pets in a similar situation in 23 years of practicing.

"Any encounter with a wild animal should be considered an encounter with a rabid wild animal," he said.

Koenigs said Tatum is recovering at home, resting well. Dr. Stamps let the Koenigs family keep the quills as a keepsake.
