WICHITA, Kan. -

While many of us spend the next few days in malls and department stores, one Wichita church has a different idea.

Church of the Well is participating in what's called the "advent conspiracy," a movement to cut down on the commercialism of Christmas and focus on the meaning instead.

An upside down tree is a symbol of the movement.

That doesn't mean no shopping at all, says Pastor Mike Gaddie.

"The focus is not necessarily to stop spending," he said. "We'll spend money on Christmas. ... What are some of the ways ... to support someone else through that purchase?"

The movement dedicates each week leading up to Christmas to a different topic, like worship, spending less and giving more.
