WICHITA, Kan. -

It's vacation time. You're focused on your family, a beautiful destination, and having fun.

Maybe too focused.

"Most (burglaries) are a crime of opportunity. We become lazy... whatever it might be, careless... and we don't keep an eye on our stuff," Security expert Bruce Reesman said.

Bruce says don't forget to protect your belongings, even in a locked a hotel room.

"Use the latch, use the door knob block, and use the dead bolt. And hopefully this little device we're going to test today will be another level of security," Bruce said.

That little device is the Ila Security Wedge Door Alarm. It claims to sound an alarm if someone tries to break in. And it promises to prevent the door from opening all the way.

We bought it for $18.95. That does not include shipping.

The instructions say all we have to do is turn it on and it's ready to go. Bruce turns it on and wedges it under the door. Then I try to "break-in."

"I think that would wake you up," Bruce said as the alarm went off.

But the Wedge Door Alarm didn't stop the door from opening. Bruce thinks the gap between the bottom of the door and the floor was too wide. And, he thinks the Wedge Door Alarm would work better on carpet. So, we find another room and set it up the same way.

"And it stops the door," Bruce said.

Not only does it stop the door. It sounds an alarm too. This security expert likes the results of this testing.

Does it work?

"It does," Bruce said.

The instructions say the alarm will sound for up to ten minutes if it's not turned off. And, the company says the battery is designed to last for at least three years.
