Veterans and citizens join forces to replace three memorial plaques stolen last month from Veteran's Memorial Park.
Efforts are underway to mount new granite plaques at the memorial for the USS Dorado. The submarine sank in 1943 with 77 sailors aboard.
In April, Eyewitness News reported thieves had ripped three bronze plaques off pedestals. USS Dorado Base, the Kansas group charged with keeping the memory of the sub and its crew alive, wanted the plaques replaced by Memorial Day.
Bell Memorial in Beloit saw our story and offered to replace the plaques for free. By Friday the monument will be fixed.
