BUTLER COUNTY, Kan -

The Butler County Sheriff says thieves recently took advantage of a family attending a funeral.

“It is suspected the thieves targeted this home from the obituaries and possibly called the residence from a private number on the day of the funeral to ensure no one was home,” according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.

Similar cases have happened in Wichita.

FactFinder 12 told you last fall about a family who had two homes burglarized while they were at a wedding. Police believe the thieves used the wedding announcement and social media to know when the families would be away from their homes. You can see that story here.

“To help keep this from happening to you and your family, we suggest you have someone stay at the residence during funeral arrangements and funerals. We also suggest you ask neighbors to keep an eye on the residence and ask them to call in any suspicious activity.”

You can also call your local police department or sheriff’s office and request extra patrols.
