Pay to park at WSU?

Wichita State is one of the few universities in Kansas that doesn't charge students for parking.

But that could be changing.

The school is currently waiting on results of a parking study.

President John Bardo told us that even at peak hours, about 15 percent of parking spaces are not in use, but people always want to park closer to their classrooms.

WSU plans to expand its shuttle service from the Metroplex at 29th & Oliver in anticipation of higher enrollment next fall.

Students who want to park on campus may have to decide what it's worth to them.

"I think next year we're going to be going more to zoned parking so that if you are willing to pay for parking up close you can," Bardo said. "Otherwise we'll encourage you to shuttle in or to park in the more distant lots so that it makes it easier for you."

Wichita State has also looked into building a parking garage on campus.

But the estimate on that is $12 to $14 million and Bardo says you can run a lot of shuttles for many years for that kind of money.
