Newton police officer hurt in crash

NEWTON, Kan. -

A veteran Newton police officer was treated and released from the hospital after the Chevy Tahoe he was driving was struck on the way to an accident.

The crash happened about 10 o'clock Thursday morning at 1st and Main.  The Kansas Highway Patrol, said 44 year-old Jimmy Bethards, was on his way to a accident at 1000 Washington when the crash occurred.

Troopers said the officer had his lights and sirens activated, but the driver failed to yield to emergency lights at the intersection. The car also hit another vehicle stopped at the intersection. 

65 year-old Richard D. Lowe of Newton, was in his 2001 Ford F250 stopped at the intersection, but was not hurt. The driver of the Lincoln Town car, who failed to yield to the officer, 21 year-old Tyler N. Thacker of Newton, refused treatment at the scene.
