WICHITA, Kan -

Drivers on their morning commute on Highway 254 spotted something they thought was a bit odd near Greenwich.  It looked like a small black bear eating a deer in the median.

Sedgwick County 911 dispatchers said they had multiple calls from worried drivers who weren't exactly sure what they saw.

Sedgwick County Sheriff deputies searched the area where the potential bear was spotted.  What they found gave them a good laugh.  A large black dog living at a home near the area where the reports came in.

The dog named "Max" was in a fenced in area when deputies got to his owner's home. He greeted deputies with a kiss.

The deputies tell Eyewitness News when they got the call to check out a possible bear in the area they took the call seriously. Although a bear being in the Wichita area would be quite odd, it's not out of the scope of possibilities, especially with mountain lions in the area.

A neighbor of Max's owner said his daughter-in-law called him after hearing about a bear near his house. He went to check it out.

"I came out to look at it," said Bob Robertson, a neighbor. "That would be weird for a bear to be out here, but it was my neighbor's dog Max.  I mean a bear would have been funny, but this is actually funnier. That people mistook a dog for a bear."
