It's been a staple in northeast Wichita for two decades, serving as a hub for small business jets.

Colonel James Jabara Airport, AAO, opened in March of 1993. It is named after Colonel James Jabara, a veteran pilot. The Wichita Airport Authority owns the airport, with a 6,100-foot long runway.

However, the question remains how to pronounce the airport. During a news conference Thursday morning, a spokesman with the airport authority pronounced it "Ja-bar-a."

It is also known as "Ja-bar-a" to aviation enthusiasts, including air traffic controllers.

But, Merril Teller, Storm Team 12 meteorologist, says that's not what Col. Jabara's family would say. Merril has been our source for years on how to correctly pronounce Jabara Airport. He knows Col. Jabara's family, and talked to Jabara's brother. The family pronounces it "Ja-bear-a."

Not to be confused with "Ja-bar-a", as in Jabara's Carpet Outlet. Owner Jason Jabara tells Eyewitness News it is the same family, but a different pronunciation.
