BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. -

Governor Sam Brownback visited Baxter Springs today after an EF-2 tornado tore through the town.

The Governor gave little warning he was coming to the southeast Kansas town, simply arriving by helicopter, offering words of encouragement and promises of help.

Brownback spoke about how he hopes to qualify for FEMA disaster funds. In order to get that money, a single storm has to have caused a minimum amount of uninsured damage.

"We're going to do something that's sort of unique, combine the damage from here with that in other states to qualify..."

The storm moved from Oklahoma to here and then on to Missouri leaving damage along the way.

Brownback spoke about the spirit of the people who have lost so much. He and others contributing to the cleanup efforts say they are concentrating on making sure residents have what they need now, and long-term.
