The epic icicles dripping down from buildings and homes after last week's winter storm could be causing damage to your home.

Francis Silveira, Wichita home inspector, said the dripping water will cause damage to decks, roofs and could lead to bigger problems.

"Sometimes you see mold and mildew," he said.

The icicles form by heat leaking through the roof. The snow melts, then refreezes. Homeowners are encouraged to check their attic if they notice an icy buildup on their roof.

"There shouldn't be any ice on homes if it is well insulated and well ventilated," Silveira said. "You really need to take pictures of the areas that is forming this ice. When the warm weather changes, it's a good time to do a little attic work and fix the problem."

The icicles themselves can do damage to your home, or seriously injure people, when they fall. It is the property owner's responsibility to clear them.
