HAYS, Kan. -

Fire left a house heavily damaged in Hays.

It took about three hours to bring the fire under control at 1910 Fort Street. A police officer spotted the fire about 2:51 Wednesday afternoon and called 911.

Crews found fire burning in the basement, but could not enter due to the flames burning through the first floor causing it to collapse.

Several fire crews were called to assist. A total of 36 firefighters and nine fire trucks were operating at the scene.  Crews used four fire hydrants and five attack lines.

No one was home at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire  and damage estimate remains under investigation.
