WICHITA, Kan. -

Investigators are looking for a cause in a massive fire that destroyed a number of cars in a parking lot of southeast Wichita apartment complex.

Firefighters were called to the scene at Parke East Townhomes on south Woodlawn around 11 p.m. Friday.

Crews found eight cars engulfed in flames upon arrival. Residents living nearby said they came out to see what was happening after they heard what sounded like several explosions.

"I came out because it was like a bomb, to me it sounded like a bomb and then just each car got to igniting and the flames just got really huge," said Parke East resident Stephanie Kirkendall. "You couldn't even come past the driveway right here because of so much smoke and fire."

A nearby building was evacuated, but the fire never spread to the apartments.

"There was a carport area above the cars that was also fully involved so they had a lot of work they had a good aggressive attack to keep it from getting into peoples homes," said Battalion Chief Sid Newby.

No one was hurt.

The vehicles are a total loss. A damage estimate has not been released.
