Gingerbread Village
WICHITA, Kan. -

Gingerbread walls, gum drop doorbells and marshmallow snowmen. All part of making the ultimate gingerbread house.

For the first time, the Gingerbread Village has made its home at Exploration Place.

"It's a very positive opportunity for families to do something together to start off the holiday season," said Kathy Wilson, Chair of the Gingerbread Village.

Gingerbread Village has been a community event put on by non-profit group Assistance League of Wichita for nearly two decades.

"We had a lady come in who's done this for 19 years," said Wilson. "She brought her children when they were small and now she's bringing her grandchildren."

All of the money from the weekend event, plus what's raised at the special Gingerbread Village Gala, go to help the group's philanthropic programs.

  • Operation School Bell - provides new school clothing, coats, shoes and grooming kits to USD 259 students in need
  • Scholarships - help pay for fees/supplies needed to pursue a vocational degree at Wichita Area Technical College or Butler Community College
  • Sexual Assault Victim Support Kits - provide victims with new clothing and toiletry items through the Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center
  • Bear-Hugs - provide teddy bears and toiletry items to sexually abused children upon their entry into the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner/Sexual Assault Response Recovery Team program at Via Christi-St. Joseph and Wesley Hospital

The event is on Saturday 16th from 10 a.m. till 5 p.m. and again on Sunday 17th from noon to 5 p.m.

For members it cost just $5 and that includes all Exploration Place activities including the gingerbread making supplies. For non-members it's $9.50 for adults (12-64), $6 for youth (3-11), $8 for seniors (65+) and Children under 2 are free.
