(WICHITA, Kan.) -

It was a surprise to him and a huge relief to his proud mom and dad.

Friday, East High Senior Josiah Gray received a $40,000 scholarship to the University of Kansas.

The generous gift came courtesy of the Charles & Joanne McIlwaine Foundation.  Together with other scholarship awards it will be enough to cover all his expenses.

"For a while it as a little back and forth between WSU and KU, but I was really leaning towards KU and I was hoping for this scholarship," Gray said.

The unique scholarship is available only to students who follow in the footsteps of Charles McIlwaine, a 1957 East High grad.  The student must graduate from East, be an Eagle Scout (Josiah has 44 merit badges) and have a great academic record.  Oh, and the student MUST attend KU.

"We were thinking maybe if we ate a lot of Beanie Weenies we could afford KU.  But this really cinched it," his father Don said.

Josiah Gray plans to pursue a degree from the KU School of Engineering in the fall.
