Douglas Avenue has been around as long as Wichita itself. Business owners in along the roadway say it's important to keep the historic area up to date. On Tuesday members of the Douglas Design District board met to discuss the areas future. Their plans include commissioning murals by local artists, courting new businesses and cleaning up abandoned buildings.
Board members have also been in talks with the city about a plan to update the infrastructure on Douglas from Washington to Oliver. The city contracted a Denver based design firm to make plans to redo the roadways by adding landscaping and pathways. The final plan is due in June.
City leaders say the project could cost millions but they haven't decided where the funding will come from yet.
