A three vehicle accident leaves two people dead in northwest Kansas.

The accident happened about 3:30 Monday afternoon on I-70 at MP 136 or one mile east of the Ogallah exit in Trego County. The Kansas Highway Patrol said a eastbound car driven by 17-year-old John Louis Smith of Ottawa, crossed the median and entered westbound lanes.

The car struck a semi and another car sending both cars into the median, while the semi came to rest in a south ditch. Smith was dead at the scene. A passenger in Smith's car, 12-year-old, Alexis Woolsoncroft of Ottawa, also died at the scene, but another passenger survived.

The driver of the semi received minor injuries. Troopers said, 54-year-old Kevin Werner of Derby, in a third car, was taken to an area hospital for treatment of his injuries. Troopers said the drivers and passengers had their seat belts on at the time of the crash.
