SEDGWICK COUNTY, Kan. -

A Derby man has pleaded guilty to murder charges after a woman was strangled to death in her home.

Prosecutors said Charles A. Beck Jr., 40, suffocated Lonnie Staggs to death last September. Beck also tried to strangle the woman's 15-year-old son, Nathan, police said. He suffered a few cuts to his face and neck before escaping serious injury.

Beck fled after the crime, and was eventually arrested in Missouri.

He will be sentenced in May.
