Dani's Blog: NCAA tournament connections

Connect the dots.
It was a game I used to play as a kid but now I'm doing it as an adult as I look for stories here in St. Louis.
It's incredible how the NCAA tournament is overflowing with connections. Hometowns are a gold mine for storylines and so are AAU teams. Just from the Kentucky vs. K-State game alone I came across multiple.
Kentucky's Willie Cauley-Stein grew up in Spearville, Kansas and played high school ball at Olathe Northwest High School. He also played AAU ball with K-State's Nino Williams.
Wesley Iwundu is like another brother to Kentucky's Harrison twins. They played AAU ball together on the Houston Defenders and were coached by Aaron Harrison Sr.
Tomorrow as Wichita State takes on Kentucky Cauley-Stein has a deep connection to Ron Baker. Their moms played basketball together at St. Mary of the Plains college in Dodge City.
But that's only the tip of the iceberg. The NCAA basketball world is small and I'm quickly figuring that out. I'm also learning that it comes in handy when you are expected to churn out about seven stories per day. Its amazing and a blast to find all of the connections. You never know who knows who in this crazy sports world we live in.
