Three people are dead after a multiple vehicle crash in Thomas County.

It happened about 2 p.m. today on Highway-83 and 179 Junction. The Kansas Highway Patrol closed U-83 as troopers continue to remove as many as 15 vehicles off the roadway. Trooper Tod  Hileman told KWCH the accident was most likely caused by low visibility due to high winds, dirt and dust.

Hileman said there were three crashes in a two mile stretch. The first involved two passenger vehicles, the second crash involved two semis with injuries and a third crash involved seven semis and four passenger vehicles. He said it’s believed the fatalities came out of the third crash.

Hileman said efforts continue to remove vehicles off the roadway.

Rescue crews are still on the scene searching for more injured. He said no names have been released pending notification of relatives. Troopers are continuing their investigation.
