Counterfeiters cost Garden City pawn shops $18K apiece
A group of counterfeiters, passing phony payroll checks, is costing Garden City businesses big.
The Garden City Police Department says two pawn shops have lost more than $18,000 each. Business owners say it's a tough time of year to be hit by scammers.
It's not good to lose any money, but especially this amount of money," said Jeremy Farr of AAA Pawn Shop & Armory. "It's going to make it tough on everybody - especially on Christmas season."
Police say the group of men and woman pretend to be employees of "Southwest Plains Dairy." They cash checks with numbers 1600 and up labeled on them.
Officials are asking the public to be on the lookout for a white Pontiac Sports utility vehicle and a newer model red Jeep.
