Haysville police tell us the boy struck by a pickup this morning near Nelson Elementary is in fair condition at a Wichita hospital.

It happened at around 8:30am at Grand and Delos.

Police tell us the boy was crossing the street with his mother at a crosswalk when he was hit by a pickup.  He was dragged about 30 feet and suffered serious injuries to his legs.

The mother was not hurt.

"The kid was right behind the mom, and she made it across but he was just there close to the corner and the blue truck hit him," said witness Karen Larson. "It was really terrifying, I actually had to turn around and take a back way. I didn't want my kids to see."

Police say the driver, who is in his 80s, had a red light, but may not have seen it because the sun was in his eyes.  He was ticketed for the crash, but tells us his only concern right now is the boy's recovery.

The school says counselors will be on hand today and tomorrow to talk with students who may be experiencing strong emotions about what happened.
