Ceremony marks 49 years since Piatt plane crash

It was one of the darkest days in the Air Capital's history.

Thirty people died when a plane crashed in northeast Wichita January 16, 1965. A a refueling tanker from McConnell Air Force Base crashed into a neighborhood near 20th Street and Piatt shortly after take off.

Survivors and victim's family members honored those who lost their lives in a ceremony Thursday.

Victor Daniels lost a family member in the crash. He said it's important to mark the tragedy.

"There were 23 civilian lives lost, and 7 crew members," he said, "take notice."

The crash is regarded as one of the worst non-natural disasters in Kansas history.
