A former El Dorado police officer and firefighter has died after a horse riding accident.

It happened at the Sale Barn, 2595 SE Highway 54, around 2:35 p.m. Monday.

Sheriff Kelly Herzet, Butler County, said 73-year-old Ralph Green was riding a horse, when the animal got spooked and jumped a fence. Green was thrown off the horse and suffered a severe head injury.

A neighbor noticed the accident, and told his wife to call 911. Emergency crews found Green inside the fenced area not breathing. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"I know he like horses a lot," Herzet said. "This is very tragic that he landed like he did, so severe that it killed him."

Herzet said he remembered Green as an active member of public safety in Butler County.
