NEWTON, Kan. -

An accident causes a bridge to be closed after the bed of a dump truck hits it, Tuesday night around 9:30 p.m in Newton.

The bridge at SE 24th street going over the interstate is now closed. The Southbound lanes on I-135 were reduced to one lane for most of the day Wednesday. They are now back open.

Scott Koopmann with the Kansas Department of Transportation says a semi truck with a dumping bed on the back had the bed raised when it crashed into the underside of the 24h St. bridge, going Southbound on I-135.

Koopmann describes the bridge as badly damaged. An inspection crew from Topeka came to Wichita to determine what kind of repairs need to be made.

They were unable to complete their assessment, Wednesday. Crews will be back out Thursday morning. People commuting using I-135 in this area should expect some lane closures.
