Copper theft at Cornejo and Sons recycling plant

Wichita Police are searching for copper thieves who caused thousands of dollars in damage to a south Wichita recycling company.

It happened sometime Monday night at Cornejo and Sons near K-15 and I-135. Detectives said someone broke into the business and stole wire off the plant and acetylene bottles. The damage is valued at $100,000.

Jon Lewman, Cornejo and Sons, said the plant will also have to be shut down for about two weeks for repairs.

"We did find small burnt wire, but if you were to tap into one of those bigger lines, we could of came in here to a guy laying there fried on the ground," Lewman said.

This is the second time in recent months copper thieves have hit a Cornejo plant.
