A cat who went missing after Japan's tsunami three years ago has returned safe and sound.

Suika's owners gave up hope after they returned to the city of Ofunato following the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami to find their home still standing, but their black kitty gone.

But on April 10, a couple found a cat curled up in a forest about 10 miles away, BBC News reported.

He was friendly and wore a collar, so they put an ad in the local newspaper looking for his owners.

Turns out, it was Suika.

He was reunited with his family on May 9.

"Where have you been?" Kazuko Yamagishi , 64, asked Suika when he arrived.

She told The Asahi Shimbum newspaper that finding their pet was "just like a dream."
