Wichita, KS -

Drums Across Kansas will bring premier drum and bugle corps to a July 15 performance at Wichita State University’s Cessna Stadium, beginning at 7 p.m.

The corps – consisting of percussion and brass instruments and a color guard – are traveling as part of the Drum Corps International Summer Championship Tour. The high school and college students in the corps perform in stadiums throughout the United States, competing for points awarded by judges at local performances.

This year’s event will feature these corps: Blue Devils (Concord, Calif.); Madison Scouts (Madison, Wis.); Blue Knights (Denver, Colo.); Troopers (Casper, Wyo.); Oregon Crusaders (Portland, Ore.); The Academy (Tempe, Ariz.) and Mandarins (Sacramento, Calif.).

Each year, Fruhauf Uniforms (one of the sponsors of Drums Across Kansas) donates a uniform to an individual with intellectual disabilities served at Starkey, and that individual is invited to walk on the field at Cessna Stadium with the color guard. Last year, Lynn Ellington got one of the biggest thrills of her life when she accompanied the color guard on the field at Cessna Stadium. She even kept a photo of her in uniform at the event in a frame in her room. When she passed away at the beginning of this year, that photo was shared at her funeral service.

Drums Across Kansas has partnered with the Starkey Foundation to help raise funds for Starkey’s mission of serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Sedgwick County. Starkey currently serves almost 500 individuals with disabilities through its employment, community living, life enrichment and case management programs. It has developed potential and created possibility in the lives of people with disabilities since it was founded in Wichita in 1930.

Through the partnership with Drums Across Kansas, Starkey will receive half of any general admission tickets it sells. General admission tickets to the show are $10 and can be purchased through Starkey by visiting, purchased online at and, or by calling (316) 512-4173.
