Hate mosquitoes, but hate the chemicals often used to keep them at bay more? With this week marking National Mosquito Control Awareness Week, try these nine ways to repel mosquitoes naturally, as suggested by BobVila.com.
9. Get a fan going
Even a fan blowing at two miles per hour is enough to overpower a mosquito, so try strategically placing fans around your deck or patio to get a good breeze going.
8. Plant some lemon grass
Thai lemon grass contains citronella oil, which repels mosquitoes naturally.
7. Dress the part
Certain species of mosquitoes are drawn to dark clothing, so try to wear lighter colors and avoid scented perfumes or lotions if possible.
6. Change your lightbulbs
Opt for LED lights, yellow "bug lights" or sodium lamps to reduce the number of mosquitoes swarming around the door as you go in and out of the house.
5. Try some catnip oil
Nepetalactone, the essential oil in catnip, does more than just drives cats crazy. It's also a more effective mosquito repellent than DEET.
4. Build a bat house
Like them or not, bats can eat hundreds of insects in just one hour, mosquitoes included.
3. Spray yourself with some garlic
Yes, it sounds weird, but garlic is a natural mosquito repellant. Mix one part garlic juice with five parts water to make a spray that you can spritz yourself with as needed.
2. Get rid of standing water
Standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes, so clear your gutters of clogs and regularly change the water in bird baths or kiddie pools to keep mosquitoes from making new ones.
1. Use natural bug spray
There are plenty of options when it comes to bug spray that doesn't contain DEET and other harmful chemicals. Erbaviva's Organic Buzz Spray contains things like aloe, catnip oil, citronella and lemon grass oil.
