Top 5 Things To Do This Weekend In Wichita

Wait a second, top 8 events? Yes, we tricked you. Since there's so much going on this weekend, we've added a few extra events to our list of top things to do.

Spend the weekend hanging out with your favorite four-legged friend, drinking wine while you paint, getting doused in neon colors, or browsing classic muscle cars. We’ve got all this and more for this week’s top weekend picks.

1)      Woofstock

Time: 9:30 AM – 3:00 PM
Date: Saturday, October 5
Where: 6300 W 13th St. N., Wichita
Cost: Donations, $5 - $25

Why you should go: It’s that time of year to celebrate peace, love and pooches. Woofstock, which is the Kansas Humane Society’s largest annual fundraising event, will kick-off the event with the Woofstock Walk in the Sedgwick County Park.

Following the Woofstock Walk, enjoy a full day of dog friendly events with your favorite pal by participating in a doggy costume contest, ruff races, water retrieval, silent auction, doggie musical chairs contest, and much more.

The money from the fundraiser will help provide a better future for the homeless animals in the Wichita community. Admission is $5 to get in to all Woofstock activities and demonstrations.

If you want to provide help to even more animals, you can pay $25 for the VIP Admission. The VIP Admission Woofstock prize pack includes a limited edition Woofstock T-shirt, Woofstock dog bandana, and a chance to win some cool prize packets that include a year of tacos from Taco Bell, a year of pizza from Pizza Hut, and a year of movies from Warren Theatre.

 

 

2)      Fine Art For The Wine Heart

Time: 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Date:  October 3, 2013 – December 5, 2013

Cost: Tuition is $45 per person/ Members $35

Why you should go: Grab your favorite bottle of wine and some friends and come ‘paint with a twist’ at the Wichita Center for the Arts. The event, Fine Art For The Wine Heart, will take place Thursday evening, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

Enjoy a relaxing evening of sipping wine, all while you take a step-by-step art class provided by a professional artist. And if you don’t have any previous experience in painting,… no worries. Even beginner artists will be able to walk away with a masterpiece to take home. All you need to bring is yourself and a bottle of wine, the class will provide the rest!

There are three classes left for the year. Each class will create a different art masterpiece. See below for the paintings assigned for each class.

3)      Wichita Art Chatter

Why you should go: This event is geared toward the creative types and lovers of art in Wichita. The Wichita Art Museum will once again be hosting it’s ‘Wichita Art Chatter,’ an event which brings local artists, musicians, and designers together to discuss various subjects in short presentations. Some of the featured presenters will include ceramist Ted Adler, oboist Andrea Banke, jazz band director Lisa Hittle, plus four others.  The event kicks-off at 6 PM and will include a cash bar reception.

 

 

4)      Color Vibe 5K: Wichita

Date: Saturday, October 5
Time: 9 AM (beginning of first heat)
Where: The Kansas Coliseum, 1229 E. 85th St. N., Park City

Why you should go: This Saturday, you’re guaranteed to get ‘blasted with color’ in one of the most fun-filled races of the year. The Color Vibe 5K is coming to the Kansas Coliseum and invites runners of all ages and fitness levels to come participate in this stress-free, untimed event.

What makes this colorful 5K unique is that between running along with music and being doused in neon colors, runners will forget that they’re even exercising! Runners will run through four different color zones and end the event with the Dance Party & Color Throw.

Runners are asked to wear all white, crazy ‘white’ costumes are encouraged, and early-registered runners will receive a swag bag with some cool stuff. The first race will begin at 9:00 AM, in which where runners, walkers, skippers and hoppers will leave every 5 minutes.

So grab your coworkers, family and friends and experience one of the most ‘colorful’ days of your lives!

 

 5)      Taste of Newton

Why you should go: Come experience the annual Taste of Newton in the historic downtown area of Newtown. Sample delicious food prepared by over 70 local food vendors and enjoy live music performances throughout the event.

To give you an idea of what foods to expect at this year’s Taste of Newtown, here are a few examples: BBQ, Chinese, Mexican, smoked chicken, hummus with pita bread, roasted corn, baked goods, dumplings, chicken and noodles, sloppy joes, nachos, corndogs, and much more!

 

 

6)      A Blast to the Past

Time: 12 PM – 3 PM
Date: Saturday, October 5
Where: The Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum, 204 S. Main, Wichita
Cost: FREE

Why you should go: Not only is this event FREE, but it also includes FREE admission into the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum, as well. On Saturday, the museum will be hosting a family-friendly block party on the corner of William and Main Streets.

The block party will be ‘A Blast to the Past,’ featuring a look into Wichita’s historical background. Enjoy looking at antique automobiles, eating cosmic eats and treats, touring the Museum’s famous City Hall Clock Tower, listening to music from The Southeast High School Band  and  “Pop and the Boys” , and watching re-enactors from Wichita’s past.

While you’re at the block party, make sure to also take advantage of the FREE admission into the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum. Explore the museum’s 4 floors of exhibits that showcase the rich cultural and historical heritage of Wichita and Sedgwick County Kansas.
